Recently, we partnered with a leading manufacturer in Luoyang to optimize their Molybdenum Disulfide grinding production line. The client required an ultra-fine powder with strict particle size control—completely free of metallic contamination.
Molybdenum disulfide is difficult to process. It has a layered, flaky structure that tends to smear rather than shatter under mechanical force. The client was previously using a mechanical mill, but they faced two some issues: 1. Friction caused the powder to oxidize, degrading lubricity. 2. Grinding media wear introduced impurities, ruining the purity required for high-end aerospace applications. 3. They struggled to consistently hit the D99 3.5μm target without excessive ultrafine dust.

The Solution
To solve this, we deployed our Fluidized Bed Jet Mill. It utilizes high-speed compressed gas to achieve particle-on-particle impact. Here is why this matters for high-value minerals like MoS₂:
1. Clean Grinding
Because there are no grinding balls or rotors, the risk of iron or heavy metal contamination is zero. The material only touches the ceramic/alumina-lined interior and itself. For MoS₂ used in high-purity greases and coatings, this maintains the chemical integrity of the powder.
2. Sharp Particle Size Distribution
The integrated high-precision dynamic classifier is the heart of our system. It rejects oversize particles until they precisely meet the cut point. This ensures you don’t just get a low average size; you get a guaranteed D99. No oversized grains to scratch surfaces, no excessive ultrafines to cause dust.
3. Lower Specific Energy Consumption
By optimizing the nozzle circle diameter and grinding chamber geometry, we maximize the kinetic energy transfer per kilogram of gas. Compared to standard jet mills, our clients usually see a 15-20% reduction in compressed air consumption—which is the primary operating cost of a jet mill.
The Result
The installation of the Epic Powder Jet Mill resulted in an immediate upgrade to the client’s product quality and output.
“The Epic team didn’t just sell us a machine. They engineered a solution that fits our specific crystal structure. We are now producing premium MoS₂ at a price point we couldn’t achieve before.”
