Excellent filler – Barium Sulfate in Nylon Modification

Barium sulfate, also known as barite, is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic inorganic compound with the chemical formula BaSO4. It is known for its high density, high whiteness, good chemical stability and resistance to acids and alkalis. It’s also insoluble in water and most acids. These characteristics make barium sulfate widely used in many industrial fields. Barium sulfate shows unique advantages especially in the field of plastic modification and in the modification of nylon (PA).

Nylon, a polymer with excellent mechanical properties, wear resistance, chemical resistance, and self-lubricating characteristics, is widely applied in many industrial sectors. However, disadvantages such as high water absorption and poor dimensional stability limit its application range. Therefore, modifying nylon to improve its performance has become especially important. As a neutral filler, barium sulfate plays multiple roles in nylon modification, including reinforcement, toughening, and enhancing surface gloss.

Reinforcement effect

As an inorganic filler, barium sulfate can significantly improve the rigidity (modulus) and hardness of nylon. It is suitable for industrial parts that require high stiffness, such as gears and bearings.

Experimental results show that increasing the content of nano-barium sulfate improves both the flexural modulus and tensile modulus of nylon. Notably, when the mass fraction of nano-barium sulfate reaches an optimal value (e.g., 3%), the mechanical properties of nylon reach their peak. This reinforcement effect is mainly attributed to the inherent rigidity of barium sulfate and its good interfacial bonding with the nylon matrix.

Dimensional stability: Barium sulfate reduces shrinkage and warping during processing or use, enhancing dimensional precision.

Heat deformation temperature (HDT): By restricting the movement of polymer chains, it improves thermal stability and expands nylon’s applicability in high-temperature environments, such as automotive engine parts.

Toughening effect

Beyond reinforcement, barium sulfate also contributes to the toughening of nylon. Nano-barium sulfate particles interact with the nylon matrix to form an elastic transition layer. This layer helps distribute and absorb interface stress, thereby mitigating external impact energy and enhancing the material’s toughness.

However, it is important to note that excessive barium sulfate content may lead to particle agglomeration, which can reduce performance.

Improved gloss

Barium sulfate has a strong light-reflecting ability in the ultraviolet and infrared wavelength ranges, which enables it to show high brightness in plastic coloring formulas.

When barium sulfate with an appropriate particle size is selected to fill nylon, the surface gloss of the processed product can be significantly improved. Furthermore, since the refractive index of barium sulfate closely matches that of polymers like nylon, it helps preserve the brightness and color tone of added pigments.

Practical application

In practice, barium sulfate is typically incorporated into nylon via melt blending in nano form. This approach takes advantage of the size effect, high specific surface area, and strong interfacial interaction of nano-barium sulfate. The result is a composite that combines the rigidity, dimensional stability, and heat resistance of barium sulfate with the toughness, processability, and dielectric properties of nylon—achieving outstanding overall performance.

Barium sulfate has shown multiple effects such as significant enhancement, toughening and gloss improvement in nylon modification. By carefully controlling its content and particle size distribution, manufacturers can optimize the mechanical performance of nylon, improve product durability and appearance, balance cost and performance, and tailor formulations for specific applications—greatly expanding nylon’s potential uses.
